Mexican Folk Art

Evelyn Vargas is an emerging Mexican artist whose practice focuses on elements of nature with historical significance. Her approach draws on creating unique, colourful and elaborate "Birds of Paradise" and wildlife scenes incorporating new forms of reinterpreting and expressing her culture within the local context and towards the outside.

She likes to combine the ancient qualities of hand made paper produced by the Otomi indigenous people of the central Mexican Plateau region using bark from the mulberry, nettle and wild fig trees with modern materials and techniques such as acrylic. This traditional hand-made Mexican paper provides an ideal media for Evelyn's art which together creates a distinctly beautiful blend of colour and nature.

Her work is fresh, natural, simple and imaginative which gives it her unique style and enables her to share her culture and wonderful artistry with the outside world.
