Meet the Maker: Sunset Coast Ice-Cream
Leah Brenstrum is the creative and chef behind Sunset Coast Ice-Cream, dreaming up delicious flavours of locally sourced fruits.
 
Sunset Coast has been trading for almost a year, with their 1st anniversary coming up later this month. Originally from New Zealand, Leah had become accustomed to real fruit ice-cream always being within a stones throw from wherever she was. Now living in Australia it was proving difficult to find. The idea of Sunset Coast was born out of a craving of her own! After discussing with her partner Alan, the idea of a food truck so that everyone could have a taste came to fruition and now she has an endless supply for herself!

Leah is a chef by trade and has a passion for ‘keeping it local’, as do we at Perth Makers Market! All her products are made with 100% Aussie fruit, and sourced in WA wherever possible. Right now beautiful blueberries from Dwellingup are on the top of her ingredients list.
You will find Leah serving up her delicious real fruit ice cream in her food truck named 'Shirley' all around Perth. She has recently added a bicycle cart; 'Pierre' to the Sunset Coast family - ain't he the cutest?!

When asked if there are any other makers out there who inspire her she was quick to give a shout out to Esther and Jude from Plants With Purpose. Laura loves how they “are an inspiring team, creating beauty and basically just being awesome, sharing a message of self love and affirmation through plants.”
As for the future for Sunset Coast, Leah would love to take her vision full time. "I work pretty hard when I'm my own boss, constantly looking for new ideas, inspiration and growth." Leah's partner Alan however has other plans, dreaming of an early retirement! The opportunities really are endless when you have your own small business.

What Leah loves most about her relatively new business venture is the consistently positive feedback; "people who say they don't like ice cream tell us they love ours, which is so amazing." She also gets to stretch her ‘chef muscles’ with specials and sundaes which feed her creative side.

Leah’s words of wisdom as she goes into her second year of trade: “Do your homework! After that I very much believe the saying that fortune favours the bold.” – good advice we think!
