Meet the Maker: Equal Candles

Equal Candles is an LGBTQIA+ owned candle business, creating handmade and poured soy deluxe candles. Their range is uniquely sassy, incorporating humour and their own fun spin on the candle industry, not to mention their divine and never before seen scents. 

Creating Safe Spaces for LGBTQIA+ Individuals With Candles That Smell Oh So Delightful

Founded by Kieran and his boyfriend Josh, Equal Candles was born from a passion for creating fun and unique candles with a twist. What started as a project pouring candles for friends and family, grew into an opportunity to create unique scents that you can't find in a traditional brick and mortar store. Kieran has always dreamed of owning his own business, and when the opportunity to create Equal Candles presented itself, they jumped in headfirst. They wanted to create a product that was sassy and humorous, to make people smile and enjoy their candles in an entirely new way.
Equal Candles was founded with a core value of bringing awareness to LGBTQIA+ issues in Australia. It is an inclusive brand that celebrates everything that makes us unique. Feeling at home is so important, and many LGBTQIA+ individuals do not have a feeling of home, due to family issues or other personal issues. Equal Candles wanted to create a product by the community for the community, to decorate safe spaces with. 
Ultimately, their candles are for anyone who loves a quirky product that incorporates humour. 

Time Consuming But Worth It!

All of their candles are handmade and poured using a deluxe soy wax. They slowly melt the wax down using a wax melter and then incorporate their luxurious fragrance oils into the candles. Once the candles have been poured they are left to set for a week before being shipped or sold to their loyal customers.

A Side Project with an Important Message and Amazing Growth Potential

Equal Candles is currently a side project for Kieran and Josh, but their dream is to one day work full time in the industry. They believe that this will become a reality. Having only been around for 1 year, they have already experienced significant growth and so much love from their customers. This inspires them to continue working on Equal Candles as it goes to show how important it is to have products that support the LGBTQIA+ community. 

Taking Risks that Pay Off in the Best Way Possible

The biggest challenge that Equal Candles have faced as a small business has been finding the resources to create seasonal products that large business can more easily produce. They took a huge risk in investing their business funds into creating a unique Halloween range, which turned out to be their highest selling products to date. What they have learned from this experience, is that you need to be brave and believe in what you're producing, and the benefits will naturally follow.

Kieran and Josh have always loved retail and their favourite thing about Perth Makers Market is that you get to support local small businesses that are creating products that you can't find anywhere else.

A Very Special Christmas Range

Equal Candles are really excited to be releasing their Christmas range and bringing these festive products to all of their upcoming markets. 

They will be at our Christmas Twilight Market on Friday 18^th November at the Perth Cultural Centre where they will be showcasing their brand new 12 days of Christmas advent calendar, which contains 12 unique scents to leave your space smelling extra festive, as well as their reindeer wax melter which is included in the bundle.

We’ll be there from 4pm to 9pm with over 80 market stalls selling handmade goods, delicious food, live music, and a pop-up bar!
